The Three Types of Water in Your Home
Did you know there’s more than one type of water being pumped into your home? There are actually THREE different types of water that you typically deal with on a daily basis, each with its own appliances and uses:
- Utility Grade Water
- Working Grade Water
- Food Grade Water
Understanding the difference between these different grades of water can help you improve your home’s efficiency and protect your family’s health.
Utility Grade Water
This is the raw water that comes into your home straight from the city or a well, and this water is not subject to treatment as it is typically for outdoor uses, such as:
- Washing the car
- Lawn irrigation
- Landscaping (watering plants)
Because utility grade water doesn’t come in contact with people or appliances, you don’t have to worry about water hardness or water filtration. The highest quality of water isn’t needed here.
Working Grade Water
Working-grade water needs to be treated and softened, as it is used for indoor cleaning tasks such as laundry, washing dishes, and showering.
It’s important to get this water treated, as over time, hard water can damage fixtures and high-efficiency appliances like:
- Washing machines
- Toilets
- Showers
- Tubs
- Refrigerators
- Dishwashers
Working grade water that is untreated can also leave unsightly rust stains on your appliances, and can damage clothes that go through the washing machine multiple times. If not treated, the working grade water that you use in the shower can dry out your skin and hair.
Filtered working-grade water can be consumed, but for cooking and drinking it’s best to use the highly-filtered food-grade water.

Food Grade Water
Food grade water is the highest quality filtered water that you would use for things like drinking, cooking and ice. This water is filtered and softened to remove all pollutants and toxic chemicals to ensure that you are only consuming the highest quality water.
